Design Exhibition Helps Create the Next Marc Newson

Leading design exhibition, WORKSHOPPED is set to uncover Australia 's next Marc Newson when it launches on 9 August 2005 at Sydney 's Strand Arcade. The free exhibition differs from any other design showcase held in Australia because its main purpose is to foster promising talent and turn their ideas into a commercial reality; ready for the world stage. The team behind WORKSHOPPED understands the journey from design graduate to making a living from design in Australia is extremely difficult. Australian design sensation, Marc Newson, may be a star on the world stage, but he is the exception. Support in Australia is limited and most designers become disillusioned with the many hurdles it takes in getting their designs from the drawing board, to manufacture, and finally to market.

As a measure of the exhibition's evolution, WORKSHOPPED has collaborated with designer Danny Cheung to produce one of the most popular items exhibited by WORKSHOPPED; the 1984 Fishbowl. On sale in commercial quantities for the very first time, the futuristic fish residence with Orwellian references, received rave reviews both locally and internationally (most notably Wallpaper* magazine) and will be launched as part of this year's Sydney Design Week (details to follow).

"The WORKSHOPPED event has been a key part of Design Week for the past four years," said Leanne Gibson , one of the event organisers. "The aim of the exhibition is to nurture Australian design excellence and facilitate successful commercial relationships between designers, industry and the market; both locally and internationally."

The beautiful 19 th century Strand Arcade in Sydney will host WORKSHOPPED 05 and provide a spectacular backdrop for 30 designers from NSW, VIC, ACT, TAS, WA and the USA, who will utilise both floor and air space to dramatic effect. The exhibition will feature a range of design principles and materials including furniture, lighting, screens, installations and graphic design.

The brief for WORKSHOPPED 05 proposes 'Design is in the detail', asking designers to identify their potential market and investigate the process in moving from 'prototype to production', whether for a limited or mass market. Opening night will be attended by approximately 1,000 invited guests from media, design, architecture, retail and manufacturing.

BOMBAY SAPPHIRE DESIGN DISCOVERY AWARDS

workshopped first approached Bombay Sapphire with a proposal to support Australian design through workshopped 02. Although Bombay had a history of supporting design overseas, workshopped was their first collaboration in Australia. Bombay is still a major supporter of workshopped and has now increased its support of the wider design community with the Bombay Sapphire Design Discovery Awards.

Now in its 3rd year, workshopped designers Jon Goulder and Adam Goodrum have both won the prestigious and lucrative award which includes a $20,000 scholarship and trip to Milan to attend the 2006 Salone de Mobile.

Our advice...enter this award! A great launch pad, with tangible benefits. Check www.bombaysapphire.com/designdiscoveryaward for details. Entries close 15 July 2005.

JON GOULDER WINS INAUGURAL BOMBAY SAPPHIRE DESIGN DISCOVERY AWARD

At last nights event, held at SPACE Furniture in Sydney, Jon was announced the winner of the $20,000 prize. Jon's fruit bowl, proudly exhibited in workshopped 02, was selected by the panel of 12 judges from over 150 entries.

The excitement began 2 weeks ago when Bombay Sapphire contacted workshopped to advise that Jon Goulder and Danny Cheung had made it in to the final 6 and Johan Larsson into the final 10. Of course we were very proud and thrilled to be allowed to pass on the great news to the finalists! Jon called 5 times in the lead up to the awards, convinced we knew who had won....we didn't.

With 600 (somewhat noisy!) guests crammed into Space, the legend that is Philippe Starck arrived, and without too much ado, announced the finalists and the winner. A beaming Goulder was unable to speak for 30 seconds and was clearly 'stoked'.

Congratulations to Danny, a great achievement to be standing as 1 of the final 6. Rumour has it that Danny took the opportunity of asking Starck for a job.....watch this space! Danny entered a portfolio of work but the judges selected his Umbrella Stand, which was exhibited as part of workshopped 02.

Jon now plans to take a few weeks to think about what it all means, and what the next step might be. Certainly this award will go along way to placing the spotlight on great designers like Jon, and hopefully provide a springboard to bigger things.

Check the wrap in today's Domain (page 14). There also be a feature article in The Financial Review, 31 October.

One of workshopped's designers, Jonathan Ingram, held an extremely successful 'open workshop' on Saturday August 16. Jonathan provided 'snags' and the crowd spent the day checking out designs in progress, prototypes and finished works. Also on show were exhibits from worskhopped 01 and 02, including the fabulous 'Nest Clothes Hanger', 'Nest Mirror' by Doris Ko. There was much interest in Doris' 'Flocked Wall Panels' which we can only hope will find their way into production soon!

Tuesday August 5, The Strand Arcade Sydney, 19 designers, 25 exhibits, over 1000 people...what a great vibe!! It's 6pm, final adjustments to exhibits are complete, deisgners begin to smile, and the place swells with invited guests, Bombay Sapphire and DJ grooves.

At 6.45pm Sydney Lord Mayor, Lucy Turnball, officially opened workshopped 03 as the first event of Sydney Design Week.

Opening night left a smile on everyone's faces and set the scene for what has proven to be an extremely successful exhibition. The Strand Arcade provided exposure on an unprecedented level, with enquiries from the design industry, media and the general public.

Media coverage has already included Indesign (June), Wallpaper (June), Monument (July), Domain - Sydney Morning Herald (August), The Melbourne Age (August) and Arts & Minds - The Sydney Daily Telegraph (August). Forthcoming editorial has been confirmed for Inside, Indesign and Monument magazines.

A special thanks to the workshopped 03 sponsors (see sponsor link) who have provided vital support. Further, there are many people who have given generously of their time and resources - many thanks! And finally, to the extremely talented workshopped designers - congratualtions!
