TOMMY CEHAK

Company: the study

Exhibit Name: Droplight

Design Intent: The Droplight was designed with gravity and movement towards the ground in mind. The form is very fluid (taking from images of liquid being poured) and with an interest in Art Deco forms and lighting I wanted to design a hanging lamp that looked like it should be suspended from a ceiling.

Description: Droplights are made from translucent porcelain. Because of this they are fine and delicate objects that have a sense of craft and the unique about them. As a source of lighting, the Droplights offer an ambient glow as individuals or in small clusters.

Production: Slip-cast porcelain from a plaster mould. The forms are then fired at 1300 degrees Celsius where they warp slightly as the porcelain vitrifies, thus producing a translucent material. In ceramic form the Droplights are really only suited to small run production due to the complicated form. However I'm investigating the possible manufacture of plastic or rubber versions of the lamps for a larger production run.

Market: The Droplights are suited to either domestic or commercial applications.

You should know: Tommy is a Sydney based designer and student of the College Of Fine Arts (UNSW). Tommy currently works with another local designer, and fellow WORKSHOPPED 05, exhibitor Trent Jansen as the study, together working on a range of projects from object and furniture design, to graphic and interior design.
