Exhibit Name: Lotus Light
Design Intent: The light was inspired by classic pendant lights such as Achille Castiglioni's Taraxacum 88S and Paul Henningsen's PH Artichoke light. The design is an attempt to blend traditional forms and ornamentation with modern manufacturing techniques.
Description: The design takes its inspiration from the layered petals of a lotus flower. Each petal has been laser cut from a 0.8mm thick sheet of aluminium. The petals have been acid etched with a floral motif derived from the representation of lotus flowers in Buddhist paintings. Each petal is fixed to the upper housing and held in a tensioned arc by a series of stainless steel cables. This technique allows a double layer of curved petals that not only gives the light its floral appearance but diffuses the direct light by reflecting off the staggered reflective aluminium petals.
This piece is designed for maximum impact. It is large, detailed and unique. The combination of traditional ornamentation with modern materials and processes is what some would term Technoromanticism
Production: Sand cast aluminium upper, Laser cut aluminium sheet with acid etched pattern, Stainless steel cables and fittings, Hand Assembly
Market: The large scale and decorative style of the Lotus pendant light would suit most large modern spaces. It is particularly suited to foyers or areas with ultra high ceilings.
You should know: As a designer I pay particular attention to detail. My designs whilst tending towards clean and simple lines, stand out through well defined details. I am always exited to learn about new materials and technologies and constantly look at new interpretations of traditional ideas. Specializing in Industrial design has given me invaluable experience in materials and manufacturing processes, and has given me a solid base to explore other areas of design.
