TRENT JANSEN

Company: Trent Jansen Studio

Exhibit Name: Bag Vase

Design Intent: The Bag Vase was designed to make reuse of a common household by product, taking this valueless item and using it to creating something precious. The plastic bag is the most disrespected item used in the household, so it was used to provide form in the creation of an item that caries a lot of value, a porcelain vase.

Description: The Bag Vase is a small porcelain vase that is formed by pouring ceramic slip into a plastic bag. Once the ceramic has dried the bag is stripped away, leaving a twisted and creased form that has taken on all of the surface textures of the plastic bag.

Production: The Bag Vase is produced on a small run basis, using a different plastic bag for each vase so that each piece is unique.

Market: This piece is targeted at young professionals who desire quirky domestic furniture that provides more substance than the average. This piece appealing to those who prefer a one-off, crossing the divide between art and design.

You should know: As a designer it is my desire to create quirky objects developed from a conceptual basis, offering more substance than the average household item and providing the user with true interaction both physically and intellectually. I design for those who require a personal connection with the things that surround them.

In addition it is my intention that my work takes as little toll on the environment as possible, combining an interesting and purposeful concept with an innovative and sustainable use of materials.

Exhibit Name: Red X

Design Intent: Red X was designed to provide a portable storage system that allows as much storage space as possible when assembled, packing down to the smallest possible volume when knocked down.

Description: Red X is a storage system made up a single plywood unit. This unit is used in multiples, sloting and locking to form storage units of varying sizes and capacities.

Production: Red X is produced through laser cutting a single shape from laminated plywood. This is a very simple and cost effective form of production. Due to this simplicity, Red X can easily be produced in varying sizes to cater for all storage needs.

Market: Red X is targeted at young professionals who desire quirky domestic furniture that provides more substance than the average.

Being a piece of knockdown furniture Red X provides for a modern modular lifestyle, it is easily deconstructed and reconstructed for changes in living space. This aspect of the construction of Red X means that this piece is great for those who move frequently, packing down to the size of a small suitcase.
