Company: The Other Edge, Inc.
Exhibit Name: Mesto
Design Intent: I wanted to design something that was simple yet could be profound - by offering a slight twist on tradition. I decided that I also wanted to play with the idea of table top architecture.
Description: MESTO can hold both tea-lights and tapers. The candlesticks can be cast or machined and have a polished mirror finish on a scalloped curve with a bead blasted finish on all other sides. This is a metaphor hoping to reflect Australia 's beautiful and varied landscapes. Sandblasting represents the surfaces and cliffs that have been etched by wind and sand along the coasts, and the polished curve acts as a "surprise" and mirrors the beauty that surrounds it, catching the light of surrounding candlesticks to give an appearance of a multitude of candles.
The intense heat that is used to produce molten aluminum needed for the casting process is ana logous to the intense heat that has shaped the interior of Australia 's landscape. Why aluminum? Australia is one of the largest producers of raw aluminum in the world, and BHP Billiton is a huge player in the economic lives of many industries both in and out of Australia. This product could have a high-end feel for a mass produced, yet crafted piece. An Australian foundry could use this product to expand product offering without expanding manufacturing equipment.
Mesto comes in three sizes 50x50x370mm 50x50x280mm and 50x50x190mm
Production: Mesto could either be cast or machined. Casting would allow for lower production costs.
Market: High-end giftware.
