JO PHILIPPSOHN

Company: dwell by jo

Exhibit Name: slat

Design Intent: The premise behind slat was to explore the potential of creating detail and imagery on a two dimensional plane within a three dimensional product, as well as through the form of the product itself. Focusing on the outdoor market that is so prominent and celebrated in the Australian lifestyle, the aspect of nature and light further play into creating this detail, allowing for variations within the piece dependent on its momentary environment

Description: Slat is a low set seat, employing simple slatted components to create a more detailed form. Within these slats are numerous cuts and forms that create the illusion of pattern and images peeking through the slats. Slat can be used on its own as an individual seat or grouped to form a bench or daybed for outdoor relaxation.

Production: Slat will be created in medium level production runs - to create a b alan ce between price point control, whilst still maintaining feasibility of one off custom designs on request.

Market: The market for slat is broad as the piece is flexible in use and presentation.

Suitable for balconies, courtyards and expansive gardens, slat is ideal for the residential market. Slat is also suited to the hospitality market, bringing style and detail to al fresco eating and drinking

You should know: Jo is a Sydney based designer who celebrates the intellectual approach to design, and is particularly captured by the potential that exists within a form. Her pieces celebrate Jo's own studies into the use and capability of form, and encourage both user interaction, and more recently, nature's interaction with the form. After receiving much acclaim for her previous piece flip flop, Jo is now launching bloom and slat onto the waiting market.

Exhibit Name: bloom

Design Intent: The recent return to the decorative in form and furnishings sparked an interest in me as the public are encouraged to immediately embrace this style shift. Through bloom, I sought to ease this transition by celebrating and juxtaposing the features of both the modern and the decorative.

Description: Bloom features a flowing floral silhouette encased in a linear, straight edged form. A sculptural piece in its own right, bloom also acts as a coffee table with built in magazine rack, or as a feature wine rack. Storage, display, sculpture.

Production: Production is still to be finalized - different options exist for different potential materials, and the techniques associated with these materials will determine the production volume.

Market: The market for bloom is broad in that the piece is flexible in use and presentation. From the mid to high end residential market, to commercial public areas, to retail boutique spaces, bloom targets a vast cross section of the furniture market.
